The City Of Temecula combines old traditions and new opportunities by implementing free wireless internet access (Wi-Fi) in Old Town. In spring of 2006, visitors to Old Town shops and restaurants are able to access the internet and receive their email, free of charge, thanks to this new wireless network that covers a 1/2 square mile (320 acres). By using a combination of city/retail owned facilities, the City is providing this hotspot capability in a limited area for public and governmental use.
This is a redevelopment project with the goal of developing high technology infrastructure in the Old Town area to provide more incentives for business and tourism. Additionally, City workers who are equipped with Wi-Fi enabled data equipment will benefit from this capability. These employees and local merchants have broadband access to applications that they previously could only use from fixed locations or desktop devices. Police would have access to California State databases and the Fire Department would gain access to the County computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. City inspectors and code enforcement officials could also benefit from the ability to access community development databases and the City’s records management systems (RMS).
