How do I get a building permit for a permanent sign for my business?

Determine Sign Program Area Details:Determine if the business is located in a sign program area. A sign program is a document that contains a comprehensive set of sign criteria that are unique to a specific shopping center, building or development.

Determine ZoningDetermine if the business is residential, commercial, professional office, or industrial use.  If you are unsure of the zoning, you can use the GIS tool below. 


Prepare Proposal:Prepare a sign proposal that is consistent with the requirements contained within the appropriate Development Code Section listed below. Please contact a sign company who can assist in the preparation of the sign proposal documents.

What to include: 
  • 3 color copies of sign proposal
  • 1 completed building permit application (pdf)
A Planner will meet with you at the Community Development counter to review your sign proposal and ensure that it meets all the design requirements contained within the sign program document.

Planning Approval:Once the Planner has determined the sign proposal meets all applicable requirements, the proposal will be stamped “approved” and signed. The planner will then contact a Building Technician who will issue the building permit for the sign.
