The Temecula Police Department’s Traffic Division is composed of ten motor officers, utilizing Honda and Harley Davidson motorcycles, one lieutenant, one motor sergeant, one corporal, six traffic collision specialists, two non-sworn collision investigators / service officers and a commercial truck enforcement unit. The division is responsible for the enforcement of all applicable traffic laws, investigation of all types of traffic collisions as well as general law enforcement duties. The division is overseen and supervised 22-year law enforcement veteran and former 12-year motor officer, Lieutenant Ron Heim as well as 28-year law enforcement veteran and the city’s second motorcycle officer back in 1991, Sergeant Mark Leggett.
The officers take an aggressive stance on reducing collisions and taking impaired drivers off the street by conducting regular sobriety and safety checkpoints and other traffic safety operations, some funded by the State of California’s Office of Traffic Safety. They also participate in the “Avoid the 30” anti-driving under the influence campaign, a grant-funded program that incorporates the participation of 30 law enforcement agencies throughout Riverside County.
The Traffic Division works closely with the city’s traffic engineer to further the “three E” concept of a truly effective traffic program, Education, Engineering and Enforcement.
With the close cooperation of the Temecula Unified School District, the officers are able to more effectively dedicate their enforcement and educational efforts on a rotating basis to all of the twenty three schools within the city limits.
Because of the combined efforts of the police department, the city engineer’s office and the safe driving practices of most of the city’s residents, the City of Temecula has placed #1 in the State of California, of 56 cities with populations 100,000 to 250,000, as the safest city to drive, walk and bicycle in for 2009-2010 (California Office of Traffic Safety, collision statistics).
The Traffic Division enjoys a close working relationship with the city’s rapidly increasing population and they welcome visits, educational tours and appearances at local community events, as duties permit. For more information, please contact the Traffic Division at 951-696-3042.
