The Temecula Youth Accountability team consists of a Deputy Probation Officer, Law Enforcement Officer, Deputy District Attorney, and an outreach counselor. The team works closely with the Temecula Valley School District to identify and provide intervention for at-risk students. The program is completely funded by a grant from the State Board of Corrections offered through the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act.
The Youth Accountability Team focuses on youth ages 12 – 17 with minimal history of delinquent behavior, who are experiencing problems with truancy, drugs and alcohol, school behavior, family issues, gang involvement, and mental health issues. In Temecula, 60% of the teens are in the program for shoplifting.
The intensive six month probation period for students who decide to join the Youth
Accountability Team consists of:
- Community service
- Tour of the local jail
- Weekly counseling sessions
- Home and school visits
- Drug tests
- Random searches of personal belongings
Since the, Youth Accountability Team started operating in Temecula, 85 percent of the juveniles who participated have successfully completed the program.
