What is Redevelopment?

Redevelopment is a process by which local government works in partnership with private development to enhance the social, economic, physical and environmental vitality of a city within specified project areas. Redevelopment has a direct effect on the economic future of Temecula because it promotes renovation and sponsors improvements that are focused on the growth of the community. The maintenance and improvement of the project area and the positive effect they have on the rest of the community is a major goal of Redevelopment.

The Redevelopment Agency is a legally separate and distinct organization of the City. The City Council acts as the Agency's Board of Directors. The Agency works with City staff, business owners, investors, developers, engineers, architects, residents, and administrative and government bodies to achieve positive results. Public meetings of the Redevelopment Agency are included as part of the City Council meetings and are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Benefits of Redevelopment
Positive effects of redevelopment reach far beyond the boundaries of the project area. Redevelopment efforts improve the community's image and economic and social climates. The repair and upgrade of the physical infrastructure improves the appearance and circulation of the project area. These improvements benefit the community and encourage others to invest in future development. By providing the framework for progress, the Agency can attract a wider range of goods and services to the community.

There are several benefits that occur as a result of Redevelopment activity.
  • New investment
  • A wider range of available jobs
  • Increased opportunities for shopping and recreation
  • Improved infrastructure, public facilities, and open space
  • New and renovated housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income household
  • Availability of funds to improve residential and commercial property; and
  • Increased property values
