Increase in Vehicle, Residential, and Commercial Burglaries During the Holiday Season

The Temecula Police Department has noted in the past an increase in vehicle, residential, and commercial burglaries during the holiday season. This trend has continued with the 2011 Christmas Holiday Season and we would like to take this opportunity to share some important tips for safeguarding our citizen’s cars, homes, and businesses.

Residences:

  • Keep the locking mechanisms on your doors and windows in good working order and use them to lock
  • Purchase and use a quality alarm system to protect your home.
  • Keep you exterior lighting in good working order and turn in on at night.
  • Keep shrubbery around you residence trimmed down so your neighbors can keep an eye on your property. Also, let your neighbors know when you are going to be away from home for extended periods of time so they can watch your property.
  • Watch out for your neighbors! Immediately call 911 if you see suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighborhood. If safe to do so, write down descriptions and license plates whenever possible.

Vehicles:

  • Keep the doors and windows on your car locked when not in use.
  • Activate your car alarm when your vehicle is not in use.
  • Do not leave valuables inside of your car. If you must leave valuables inside of your car while shopping, etc., leave them locked in the trunk of the car or otherwise secured out of sight.
  • Leave your car parked in secure, well lit areas whenever possible.

Businesses:

  • Make sure your locks, security systems, and video surveillance systems are in good working order and use them.
  • Report suspicious persons and activity immediately to the police.
  • Have your employees leave together at the close of business. Use the buddy system.

Personal security is everyone’s business in the City of Temecula. The Temecula Police Department would like to encourage our citizens to help us by being our eyes and ears in the community during this holiday season.
