When your children are ready for school, you may find yourself driving them from time to time. In these instances, it is wise to spend some time talking to your children about the safe way to be dropped off and picked up before and after school.
Ideally, schools should have a designated “safe zone” where children can be picked-up or dropped-off away from high traffic areas. If the school does not have a designated area, it is wise to choose a safe spot where your children can wait for you to pick them up. Here are some other helpful tips:
- Make sure your children are buckled up until your vehicle makes a complete stop.
- Drop off children in a safe location so that they do not have to cross the street.
- Make sure they enter and leave the car on the curbside only.
- At pick-up time, have your children wait in a safe location at least five minutes before you arrive.
If you are carpooling with other parents, take the time to discuss safe drop-off and pick-up practices with all the drivers in the carpool. Always have enough seat belts for every child in a carpool. And never allow more than one child to sit in one seat belt.
