Below is a letter sent by a member of the TCC explaining how the training they received helped protect her and her family in an emergency situation:
Hi,
Like every normal Friday, my toddler and I got ready to start our day. I opened the door to the garage and pushed the garage door button. The door did not move. I tried to open the door with my hands but I could not lift it. My daughter watched and asked, “Mom, why are we stuck in here?”. I called my husband so that he could walk me through opening the door manually. Smoke started to pour out of the opener followed by flames. My husband told me to grab the extinguisher by the garage door. Calmly, I moved my daughter out of harms way and pulled the pin on the extinguisher. Within seconds the fire was out.
From Valley Center my husband called the fire department using the Temecula emergency number for cell phone users[951-776-1078]. Within minutes the team from Station 84 was at my doorstep. They verified that the fire was out, disconnected the electrical, and helped me pull my car out of the garage.
My family learned where to place our extinguisher during CERT training. We also learned how to calmly suppress a small fire. Because of the knowledge we obtained through the Temecula Citizens Corp my family and home are safe.
I feel safe knowing that the direct Temecula dispatch number works and that one of the best fire departments in the country is minutes away.
Thank You, Jessica, Kirra, and Rob
