Temecula leaders are forming a citizens committee to guide creation of a plan that will chart a course for the city's next 20 years.
The Quality of Life/Temecula 2030 Master Plan will define the city's long-term goals on a variety of fronts, such as improving infrastructure and retaining businesses.
"Quality of life is really the foundation for all of the good things we want to follow," Councilwoman Maryann Edwards said at the Feb. 9 City Council meeting, when the council voted to create a "blue ribbon" committee of about 20 people to guide the plan.
Councilman Chuck Washington said Monday the plan started as a strategic economic development plan.
Temecula has grown more diverse over the years, with different subsets of the population wanting different things, he said. Besides providing for those needs, Washington said the plan will also look at what's needed to maintain services the city already provides.
City leaders credit sound long-range planning with easing its transition from a semi-rural area of less than 30,000 when Temecula incorporated in 1989 to the relatively affluent city of 102,000 today.
Council members will appoint five committee members, while other appointees will include a senior citizen, college and high school students and business representatives.
The committee is expected to be seated by the end of March and start meeting in April.
Committee meetings should be held three to four times in the coming months, and the plan is expected to be completed in the fall, according to a city report.
The committee's meetings will be advertised and open to the public, Washington said. Those interested in joining can contact the city manager's office, 951-694-6444.
